Paul Merson is never short of an opinion and he has called out Everton when discussing Bristol City’s heroics over Manchester United.

Everton have turned things around under Sam Allardyce of late after a torrid start to the season.

The Toffees were struggling down in the relegation just last month but four wins and a draw from their last five Premier League matches has propelled the club up to ninth.

But the Merseysiders were criticised by Paul Merson when he was discussing Bristol City’s Carabao Cup heroics over Manchester United as a guest on Sky Sports’ The Debate.

Ashton Gate was rocking as the Robins produced one of the shocks of the year by beating Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils 2-1 on Wednesday night.

And Merson told The Debate the atmosphere put Goodison Park to shame while giving it a new nickname more accustomed to his former club Arsenal.

“They’ve (Manchester United) played in front of big crowds, but when that place gets rocking Ashton Gate you know it’s different to a lot of Premier League grounds,” Merson told The Debate.

Fans arrive prior to the Premier League match between Everton and Watford at Goodison Park on November 5, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

“You know look at Everton on Monday night (the win over Swansea), it was like a library, then you look at Ashton Gate and it was rocking and that gets (to) players.”

The atmosphere at Goodison for the win over the Swans was noticeably subdued.

Goodison is actually one of the few remaining old fashioned English stadiums and it clearly struck Merson just how quiet the ground was.

It is down to a number of factors including the fact that at the midway stage of the season Everton have little to play for despite starting the season with outside hopes of the Champions League.
