Tottenham Hotspur finished above Arsenal for the first time since 1995 last term.
Spurs finally ended Arsenal’s North London dominance last term, when they finished ahead of their capital rivals for the first time since 1995.
Tottenham have now turned into genuine title contenders, but there are fears that Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s move to Wembley could derail them.
And while Merson admits that Spurs not having the advantage of playing at White Hart Lane is a blow, the former Gunners man still feels that the Lilywhites have the edge over Arsenal.
“If they were playing at White Hart Lane, I’d have said Tottenham all day long,” he said, when asked who will finish higher next term: Spurs or Arsenal.
“I just think, playing there [at Wembley]… their away record was one of the poorest of the top six last season.
“But I’ve got to say Tottenham. Tottenham are a better team than Arsenal.”
Spurs are yet to sign a new player this summer, with some concerns forming that Pochettino’s side will stagnate unless an injection of quality is added.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have invested heavily, following the signing of Alexandre Lacazette.
Tottenham begin their Premier League season with a match against Newcastle at St. James’ Park. while Arsenal take on Leicester City.
