Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has suggested that the Newcastle United owners must be considering the future of Eddie Howe as the club’s manager.
The former Arsenal star has said on Sky Sports News (1:18pm, September 16, 2023) that if Eddie Howe’s managerial role at Newcastle United was secure, then the club’s owners would not have any need to give him a vote of confidence.
Merson has noted that there would have been no need for Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to back Howe if they were not at least thinking about making a change.
Newcastle United struggling under Eddie Howe right now
The Telegraph reported this week that Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is backing Howe to turn things around despite the team’s disappointing results and performances so far this season.
Newcastle finished in the top four of the Premier League table last season and will play in the UEFA Champions League this campaign.

The Magpies, though, have made a disappointing start to the new Premier League campaign.
Howe’s side have picked up just three points from four matches in the league so far this season.
Newcastle will take on Brentford at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday.
Paul Merson on Eddie Howe job security at Newcastle United
Merson said: “Why would you say what they said, his job’s all right?
“There’s no need to say anything. Just leave it. Just leave it. So, there must be thought along the way.”
We believe that Newcastle should stick with Howe.
Yes, things are not going well at the moment.
And, there is a chance that the Magpies could lose to Brentford today.
There is also UEFA Champions League football coming up.
However, PIF have to stick with Howe and allow him the chance to get things right for Newcastle.
After all, it was Howe who got this bunch of players into the Premier League top four.
And the Englishman is the right manager to get the team back to the high level of last season.
