Paul Merson raves about Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford

Paul Merson said on Sky Sports News (1:45pm, February 13, 2021) that he is surprised by how well Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is doing.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, admitted that he was wrong about the 27-year-old Leeds striker.

The Englishman outlined the attributes of Bamford, adding that if the former Chelsea and Nottingham Forest striker gets injured, then Leeds could struggle.

Merson said about Bamford on Sky Sports News (1:45pm, February 13, 2021), as transcribed by The Yorkshire Evening Post: “He works his socks off up front. He’s got good movement. He scores goals, brings players into the game.

“I think he’s an absolute must. I think if Bamford gets injured, I think Leeds could struggle. For all the great play they have, he’s the one, a lot of the time, who makes it happen.

“I like him. If you’d said to me at the start of the season, I would have never seen this happening. I really didn’t. I couldn’t talk highly enough of the lad. He’s majorly proved me wrong – majorly.”

Big player for Leeds United

Bamford has been superb for Leeds so far this season and has been scoring goals for fun.

According to WhoScored, the Englishman has scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 22 Premier League games so far this season.

During the 2019-20 campaign, the striker scored 16 goal and gave two assists in 43 Championship starts for the Whites, according to WhoScored.

While Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts can play upfront, Bamford is an out-and-out number nine, and if the 27-year-old suffered an injury, then it would be a problem for Leeds.

Meanwhile, Leeds defender Luke Ayling has admitted that he and his teammates are struggling with the new pitch at Elland Road at the moment.

Leeds Live quotes Ayling as saying: “We’re thankful for this new pitch, thankful to the club. At the minute, the boys are struggling to stand up on it but it’s a brand-new pitch. It’s been raining and we play at such a tempo that if you try to change direction, you will slip on it.
