The former Gunners star says he would rank them higher if they had signed a top forward.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Paul Merson has ranked Arsenal’s transfer business this summer as a B+.

It proved to be a frustrating transfer window for the Gunners as they left it late to get their business completed.

They made an early move for Granit Xhaka before the beginning of Euro 2016 but then left it until last week to secure the signings of Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez.

Their fans have largely been frustrated by their business, although arguably the club have added in the areas that many felt needed improvement.

And Merson has been largely impressed, ranking them a B+, although he admits it would have been higher had they signed a top class centre forward.

“There was a bit of panic towards the end but I’ll give them a B+ because they did one thing they needed to and that’s sign a centre-half,” he told Sky Sports.

“They would have got an A if they had signed a top forward because I’m not sure about Lucas Perez. He’s been in Spain and their national team have been looking for a centre forward for a long time and he hasn’t played.”

Arsene Wenger will now be hoping that all his signings go on to prove themselves as smart purchases this season.

He has come under criticism to say the least this summer and his standing at the club is very much reliant on all of his signings proving to be good ones.

Should they not succeed, the pressure on him from the Emirates Stadium faithful is only likely to continue increasing.
