Premier League stalwart Jermain Defoe recently made the move from Bournemouth to Rangers.

Paul Merson has stated that his ‘only worry’ about Jermain Defoe’s move to Rangers is whether he will get the service to score the goals.

The Scottish Premiership side announced on their official website that Defoe has joined from Bournemouth on an 18-month loan deal.

Defoe brings bags of experience to Steven Gerrard’s side, with the former Liverpool man aiming to win the title in his first managerial season.

During his goalfest career, Defoe has played for the likes of Tottenham, West Ham, Portsmouth and the England national side – he shared the same dressing room as Gerrard.

Now, the duo we will be hoping to bring their success from England up to Scotland and stop their Old Firm rivals Celtic from winning eight-in-a-row.

Former Premier League winner, Merson made a prediction about what Defoe will do at Rangers, but he did express some worry.

“For me, he is a one out of two,” Merson told Sky Sports’ The Debate show on 07/01/2019 at 10:45 pm. “Give him two chances and he’ll score one. He doesn’t work on five or six chances. He is top draw.

“But my only worry would be can they [Rangers] provide him? With them little balls down the side… I think he’ll score bundles of goals.”

During his career in England’s top-flight, Defoe played 496 matches, scoring 163 goals, most notably for Spurs where he found the back of the net on 142 occasions.

Defoe will be hoping to make his Rangers debut when the Ibrox club take on Cowdenbeath in the Scottish Cup after the mid-season break – their first league encounter will be against third-placed Kilmarnock.
