Paul Merson warns Tottenham Hotspur they cannot afford a defeat to Manchester United.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur’s players will question the club’s direction if they lose the FA Cup semi-final this weekend.

Spurs play Manchester United at Wembley, a tie which will feel like a home fixture for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham have not won a trophy since 2008 and pressure is building on Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Spurs lost 3-1 to Manchester City last weekend and looked inferior to Pep Guardiola’s side, and Merson believes they are merely pretenders and not real contenders.

He said: “You have to remember what happened to Tottenham last week. People were telling me this is an up-and-coming team and they’ll be challenging for the league – they were a million miles behind City. You wouldn’t have thought they were in the same league.

“Now we’re saying, when are Tottenham going to start winning anything? You’ve got to win now. Otherwise the players start asking questions.”

The questioning though has already begun at Spurs, with Kyle Walker deciding last summer he needed to leave to win trophies, and he his move has been worth it, winning the Premier League in his first season with City.

Spurs have a chance to change course and convince their current players they don’t have to leave to win. That starts by beating United this weekend.

Merson is tipping United to win but Spurs have beaten the Red Devils at Wembley once in 2018 already, securing a convincing 2-0 win.
