Paul Merson has predicted that Tottenham Hotspur will not win the Premier League title this season.
Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he is expecting Tottenham to finish third in the Premier League this year, and suggested that one particular factor will deny them winning the title.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men look set for an intriguing season after impressing again last year – coming second for the first time in the Premier League era and, once again, proving to be the last term standing between the eventual title-winner and their trophy.
However, many are slightly more pessimistic about their chances of success with no new signings made and the fact that they are playing at Wembley this year while their new stadium is being built.

And Merson believes that playing away from White Hart Lane for the entire campaign is the factor that is set to prevent them from finishing higher than third in the top flight, before also expressing his concern regarding their lack of transfer activity.
“If Tottenham were playing at White Hart Lane I’d have them as champions. They’ve got the best team, they haven’t had to buy anybody. They will miss Walker surging forward, but Kieran Trippier is a great replacement,” he told Sky Sports.
“I just think of them playing away from home for 38 games; they didn’t have the greatest away record last year but had a superb home record.
“They worry me in that sense, but I still think they could finish third. They do need a couple more squad players before the end of the window, however.”

The positive thing for Pochettino is that he has constructed a squad that has shown signs of progression in each year that he has been at the club, and apart from Kyle Walker, he has managed to keep the majority of that squad together.
Therefore, it may not be out of the question to suggest that they can make further strides forward this season, but adding a couple more signings, as Merson suggests, surely seems like a smart idea, especially with the team set for another crack at the Champions League this term.
