Paul Merson predicts Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace

Newcastle United will take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

If Newcastle United fans think that Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has an agenda against the club, they have every right to feel aggrieved about.

Take a look at Merson’s last six predictions on Newcastle: Newcastle 0-2 West Ham; Swansea 2-0 Newcastle; Newcastle 1-1 Stoke City; Brighton 1-1 Newcastle; Newcastle 1-3 Liverpool; Southampton 2-0 Newcastle.

Clearly, it shows that Merson can’t believe that Newcastle can actually win a game. Be it home or away, be it against a struggling side or a big opponent; in Merson’s world, at best Newcastle can do is manage a draw.

Football pundits usually make their predictions based on recent performances and statistics, but it is really bamboozling as to why Merson doesn’t think the Magpies can win a game when they are one of the most in-form teams in the league (one defeat in last six games).

If you’re expecting Merson to give Newcastle at least a benefit of doubt against the bottom placed Crystal Palace – think again. He predicts Newcastle to manage a 1-1 draw against Roy Hodgson’s men on Saturday.

The Sky Sports pundit says that he can’t really separates the two sides – for a gentle reminder, the gap between them is only eight & places between them is only 12.

Of course, Palace played really well against Chelsea to earn their first win, and may get a positive result as well against the Magpies – one can’t help but ask Merson – at what point will he think that Newcastle (picked up two wins & a draw against Liverpool) can actually win a game at St James’ Park?

“What a result for Palace against Chelsea, and it just shows you how important and good Wilfried Zaha is, how big a player he is in that side,” said Merson to Sky Sports.

“This is another big, big game, and I can’t really separate them. You like to think Palace have turned the corner, but if they lose this they are virtually back to where they were the week before the Chelsea game, because they would have highlighted this game as a potential three points.

“If they can get a draw, it’s been a great couple weekends for Palace.”
