“Trent Alexander-Arnold is my unsung hero of the season because he’s come from nowhere at Liverpool and been very impressive,” Merson wrote in The Daily Star.

“He’s sneaked under the radar a little bit at times but I think he deserves more credit. He’s a young lad playing for a big club where you’re always under pressure.

“But he’s handled it so, so well. Yes, he’s made mistakes but he’s always bounced back and to be the best player on the pitch in a Champions League semi-final is phenomenal.”

Rapid progress

Alexander-Arnold has been in great form for Liverpool this season and has been superb for Jurgen Klopp’s side at right-back.

The performances of the right-back in the Premier League and in the Champions League have been brilliant and very encouraging.

The England Under-21 international, who earns £40,000 per week as salary according to The Telegraph, is very good at the back and going forward, and perhaps England head coach Gareth Southgate should at least look at the prospect of including him in his squad for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia this summer.

Alexander-Arnold has made 18 starts and one substitute appearance for Liverpool this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.
