David Moyes’s side are five points behind 17th-placed Middlesbrough, and Merson believes that this is a positive.
“I think he knows how big a job this is,” Merson wrote about Moyes in The Daily Star. “He knows they are a million miles off being a decent side.
“The fans expect more but that team is nowhere near good enough. Where’s the next win coming from? They’ve got Arsenal today.
“Moyes has lost the plot with referees lately and that’s frustration showing. The only saving grace is they’re just five points adrift, even though it’s nine games without a win. But if that gap gets much bigger, it could be good night for him.”
Sunderland have been arguably the worst team in the Premier League this season.
The Black Cats do have a few good players, but overall they have a squad that could struggle to retain their top-flight status for the 2017-18 campaign.
Moyes is a very good manager who knows the Premier League inside out, but it must be frustrating for him to deal with the current situation.
Sunderland have to start picking up points soon and put together a run of positive results.
The problem is that on Saturday afternoon, the Black Cats will face Arsenal.
The Gunners are in great form at the moment, and it is very likely that Arsene Wenger’s side will pick up all three points from the Premier League game at the Stadium of Light.
