Despite the rash nature of his game, Paul Merson is a big fan of the Tottenham Hotspur star and picked him in his Team of the Season at the halfway stage of this current campaign.

The former Arsenal man explained how ‘I wouldn’t want to play against him’ if he was a forward player, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (26/12/23 at 2:35 pm).

“I would have gone with him (Micky van de Ven in my Team of the Season), but I don’t think he has played a lot of football,” said Merson. “If he was fit, then he would have been in mine.

“But I have gone for Romero and Saliba, who has been absolutely amazing. I think the Tottenham centre-back. I think he is outstanding as well.

“He is a leader. I know he is a bit rash sometimes. But I would rather not be marked against him, if I am being honest.

“He is one of them players, if I was a centre-forward, I would think ‘nah, I wouldn’t want to play against him’.”

Yes, the World Cup winner, who was signed by Nuno Espírito Santo in 2021, needs to tone it down a little bit.

But you can’t take that aggression out of his game because it’s what makes him great and it’s a key reason why he is a World Cup winner.

Romero needs a calming influence next to him. Perhaps, in time, that will come in the shape of Micky van de Ven, because he has been outstanding since his summer move.

His injury didn’t help matters, but as soon as he returns, the Dutch star will prove to be the perfect foil for Romero at the heart of Tottenham’s defence.
