Should Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney return to Everton in the summer transfer window?
Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that Wayne Rooney should join Everton from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
Rooney has been on the books of United since the summer of 2004 when he joined from Everton and has a contract with the Red Devils until June 2019, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
Merson has suggested that the England international forward should go back to his former club Everton.
The former Arsenal and Aston Villa man believes that the 31-year-old’s return to the Toffees would help Ross Barkley.
Barkley, who is 23 years of age, is one of the best and most promising attacking midfielders in the Premier League.
“Wayne should think of his family and his career,” Merson wrote in The Daily Star. “He has a lot more to give. He could have years ahead of him still playing for a top Premier League club.
“I think he would fit right in at Everton. He’d be back home again and he’d lift the whole club. Players like Ross Barkley would only benefit from playing with him.”
Rooney, who has also operated as a midfielder, has scored two goals and created 23 chances in 17 Premier League appearances for United so far this season.
Meanwhile, Barkley has scored four goals and created 53 chances in 23 league matches for Everton so far this campaign.
United are sixth in the Premier League table at the moment, while Everton are currently seventh in the standings.
