Paul Merson has claimed to Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur could finish in the top four next season, if their players listen to Jose Mourinho’s advice.

Tottenham have taken more points than any Premier League side other than Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United since Mourinho’s arrival.

However, Spurs still only sit in seventh place in the Premier League this season – and they have not entirely convinced.

Tottenham have put in some questionable displays, but there have also been signs of encouragement more recently.

Spurs have taken 13 points out of the last 15 available to them, and Merson has seen reason to believe that the Lilywhites can push on and return to the Champions League next term.

“There’s one thing I agree on with Jose Mourinho, and it’s that he is one of the top managers in the world, and you have to listen to him,” Merson said.

“I think the players will buy into it, and if they do, I think Spurs have every chance of finishing in the top four next season.

“When you come into a club and you’ve won everything in the game, and you’re among good players who haven’t won anything, listen to the man who has won it all, because he knows how to win it!

“I think they are going to buy into it, and I’ve seen that in the past three games. Against Arsenal and Leicester they counter-attacked, they broke up. This is the Spurs way now.”

Tottenham’s latest victory over Leicester City was one of the most impressive performances that they have put in under Mourinho so far.

Spurs beat Leicester 3-0, with Harry Kane bagging a brace and looking back to his very best.

Tottenham’s last game of the season comes on Sunday, when they take on an out of form Crystal Palace side at Selhurst Park.
