Paul Merson says Michail Antonio played the best ‘I have seen for a while’ during West Ham United’s crucial 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday in the Premier League, as he told Sky Sports News (21/01/23 at 5:15 pm).

The 32-year-old, who is being linked with a possible January transfer move to Goodison Park, caused Frank Lampard’s men all sorts of problems.

That included putting James Tarkowski on his backside twice as he struggled to get the ball off the all-action forward during Jarrod Bowen’s close-range goal.

During that game, January capture, Danny Ings, made his debut for the Hammers after arriving from Aston Villa this week.

The Englishman is now David Moyes’ third striker at the club, alongside Antonio and summer signing, Gianluca Scamacca.

It remains to be seen if Antonio does stay on board, as Merson shared his thoughts on the player’s most recent performance.

“I thought Antonio is the best I have seen him play for a while,” said Merson. “He made good runs. He was a handful again. He set up the second goal.

“I thought he did well, if he plays well, then I think West Ham are a much, much better team if he plays well.”

ANTONIO SHOULD STAY

The Jamaica international has already spoken about his future this month and possibly needing to leave.

Yes, Danny Ings is through the doors and he will be expected to start a number of games from now until the end of the season.

But the Hammers should keep him on board because it will increase their chances of staying in the Premier League.

Plus, there is no logic in selling to a relegation rival, unless that player asks to leave or the interested club puts money down on the table that you can’t turn down.
