Former Chelsea striker Timo Werner is back in the Premier League after securing a loan move to Tottenham Hotspur from RB Leipzig.

Paul Merson has suggested that teams like Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal need a player like the Tottenham Hotspur new boy.

The only reason why Paul Merson feels a move to Stamford Bridge wouldn’t have been on the cards for Timo Werner is because he played for Chelsea before.

But he did throw Arsenal’s name into the hat when discussing the player and added by saying ‘I wouldn’t be surprised’ if the Premier League title-chasers bring in that much-needed goalscorer during the January transfer window, as he told Sportskeeda.

Both teams are struggling in front of goal this season. Those at the Emirates have proven their worth before, but are just lacking that cutting edge and confidence to go again.

Whilst the forward line at Chelsea hasn’t really proven itself since big money was splashed on it, with Raheem Sterling the only real previous proven performer from his stint at Manchester City.

Either way, Paul Merson dubbed Timo Werner’s move to Spurs a ‘surprise’ when discussing the problems at their London rivals.

Timo Werner to Chelsea and Arsenal?

“This is probably a funny thing to say,” says Merson.

“But if Timo Werner didn’t previously play for Chelsea, I think snapping him up on loan would’ve been something the club would have considered in January. Much like Arsenal, they need a bonafide goalscorer and I wouldn’t be surprised if they manage to sign someone this month.

“Timo Werner has been the talk of the town after sealing a surprise loan move to Tottenham.”

Timo Werner will prove people wrong

When the final ball is kicked in May, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Spurs are buying the RB Leipzig forward outright.

Sources have already told HITC Football that Ange Postecoglou’s side have the option to buy Werner for around £15.5 million in the summer.

The player is much hardened than his previous stint in England, he suits the style of play at Hotspur Way, it’s an initial loan deal and not a big money transfer, the goalscoring burden is on others and many are already expecting him to flop.

Roll that all into one and with the very impressive Postecoglou, who has showcased the ability to get the best out of players, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Werner proves to be a success.
