Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Steven Gerrard could leave Aston Villa and replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool next season.

Yes, next season.

In 2022.

Steven Gerrard.

Yes, that same Steven Gerrard who has only just left Rangers for Villa.

Big claim from Paul Merson

Former Arsenal and Villa star Merson has explained why he thinks that the Liverpool legend could take charge of the Anfield club next season.

Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “Aston Villa is a stepping stone to Liverpool for Steven Gerrard. And if things go his way he could even be at Anfield this time next year. Stranger things have happened.

“Gerrard will be Liverpool manager one day. He is on the right path. I’m sure that’s his aim. He will have a plan. This is part of the journey.

“Sitting here today you would you think he’s got no chance of being Liverpool manager next season.  But things change quickly in football.

“If you’d said to me this time last year that Dean Smith would be out of a job I’d have said no chance.  It’s all about timing.

“If Liverpool start next season badly or Jurgen Klopp wakes up morning and decides to walk away, who else are they going to go for? If Steven Gerrard does well at Villa in the Premier League then surely he is the first one Liverpool would turn to.”

Could Steven Gerrard become Liverpool boss next season?

In our view, no.

It is very, very, very unlikely that Klopp will leave Liverpool anytime soon or that the Reds will sack him.

The German is a legend at Liverpool and is hugely popular among the fans.

There is no way that the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) would sack Klopp.

Absolutely no way.

Now, of course, a manager always has to deliver results, but Klopp does just that.

The German has been doing that for years at Liverpool, winning the Premier League and the Champions League along the way.

We also do not think that Klopp will walk away from Liverpool during a season.

The German has a contract at Liverpool until the summer of 2024.
