Pundit admits he was wrong in tipping them to go down.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has told SkySports he was wrong to predict them to be relegated.

Merson tipped the Hornets to go down in his pre-season predictions, and feels he has already been proven wrong.

The pundit has been impressed with Watford’s early season form, which saw them draw with Liverpool and win away to Bournemouth.

Richarlison of Watford tackles Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool during the Premier League match between Watford and Liverpool at Vicarage Road on August 12, 2017 in Watford, England.

Writing in his predictions column this weekend, Merson predicts they will win again, tipping them to defeat Brighton 2-0 at Vicarage Road.

He said: “I’ve got to hold my hands up. I had Watford to go down at the start of the season but I watched them at Bournemouth and they were outstanding.

“Marco Silva is getting a right tune out of his side and I cannot see them going down – I made a big mistake there!”

It is too early for Watford to consider themselves safe from relegation, but the early signs are certainly positive.

The Hornets took great confidence from their draw with Liverpool, and strikers Andre Gray and Troy Deeney have barely got started for the season yet.

Manager Marco Silva impressed when he was thrown in at the deep end at Hull last season, and stood little chance of avoiding relegation.

This time around he has greater resources and has had time to prepare, and the early signs are encouraging. Merson’s admission just underlines that.
