Everton have not won a major trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 1995.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Paul Merson backed Everton to win the FA Cup this season, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports.

The Toffees have made somewhat of an underwhelming start to life under Marco Silva, and they currently sit in 11th spot in the Premier League table.

They are not going to get relegated, so Silva should really be prioritising the FA Cup this season.

Everton have a decent record in the oldest club competition in world football, with five wins to their name, but they have not lifted the trophy since 1995.

Could this be their year? Merson certainly thinks so.

The former Arsenal ace spoke exclusively to Sky Sports, and tipped the Merseyside outfit to go all the way in the FA Cup this season:

Paul Merson (l) and Phil Thompson answer questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

“There will be a raucous atmosphere for this one on Saturday night but as long as Everton match Millwall’s physicality, they will be fine. They are my favourites for the trophy. I think they will get through this dangerous fixture.”

Merson has history of backing the Blues to win the FA Cup…he did the same this time two years ago.

Millwall away will be a really tough test for Everton, not least because of the vociferous home support at the New Den, but Silva’s men should still have more than enough to progress through to the next round of the competition.

And then it will be very much down to the luck of the draw.

Everton fans will be desperate for their club to end their 24-year wait for a major trophy, and the FA Cup surely represents their best chance of doing just that.
