Paul Merson says Newcastle United have not done enough in the transfer market.
Popular Sky Sports football pundit Paul Merson has suggested that Newcastle United have not done enough in the summer transfer window.
Merson appeared as a special guest in Alan Brazil’s football morning show where he was asked to make a few predictions for the forthcoming Premier League season.
When asked who would be the first manager to be sacked or to walk away, the 49-year-old said it could be Rafael Benitez.
The former Arsenal midfielder hailed Benitez as a “great manager”, but felt the Spaniard would walk away from the job due to a lack of support.

“I don’t like to see anyone getting the sack but I always worry about the teams coming up,” said Merson in the Alan Brazil football breakfast bite show.
“I’m going to go with Benitez. He’s a great manager, I just think that [Newcastle] haven’t bought anybody yet.”

Like every top manager, Benitez can be very demanding at times, and he has been backed by the club to sign players of his choice in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle have already signed Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, and Jacob Murphy, and are close to completing a deal for Javier Manquillo, reported by Sky Sports, as well.
Newcastle have to be realistic in the transfer market. The Magpies do not have the pulling power to sign world class talents at this moment, but the club are looking to sign the right profile of players who can do the job for the team.
