West Ham United’s season so far has been undermined by their inconsistency.

Ex footballer Paul Merson enjoying day two of the Cheltenham Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse on March 11, 2015 in Cheltenham, England.

Paul Merson suggested that some serious questions need to be asked of the West Ham players following their superb performance against Liverpool on Monday night, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports.

The Hammers have been on a poor run of late, taking one point from their last three Premier League games and losing 4-2 to AFC Wimbledon in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

And Merson told Sky Sports how something must be wrong at the London Stadium, considering the fact that Manuel Pellegrini’s men conceded four to a League One side, but managed to keep a team with Liverpool’s quality relatively in check:

“You watched them against Liverpool on MNF and think, ‘How can this team get beaten and concede four to Wimbledon?’ You really have to ask some serious questions about what is going on there. You should not be letting in four goals against a side bottom of League One. And then you play against a team like Liverpool with their front three and they never really looked like scoring.”

West Ham currently sit in 12th spot in the Premier League table, six points points adrift of seventh placed Wolves, so they will need to finish the season strongly, if they are to have any chance whatsoever of finishing inside the Europa League spots come May.

The Hammers do have some of their important players set to return from injury over the next few weeks, however.

And nothing less than a top eight finish will do for West Ham this term, considering how much they spent during last summer’s transfer window.
