Paul Merson has done something of a u-turn on Arsenal hitman Eddie Nketiah.

The 23-year-old has been banging in the goals for the Gunners in recent weeks.

Since the news of Gabriel Jesus’s injury, Nketiah has netted four times for Arsenal – including a double against Oxford United in the FA Cup earlier this week.

When it broke that Jesus would be out until March, Merson called on his former club to sign an upgrade.

Speaking to The Daily Star at the time, he said: “Without being horrible, what Premier League team does Eddie Nketiah get in? Wolves are bottom for instance, they’re desperate for a goal and they wouldn’t go and get him.”

Since then, the Arsenal striker is silencing his critics and thensome.

And Merson now claims to Sportskeeda that the player – who earns £100,000 per week [The Sun] – was always going to enjoy a first three or four games as Jesus’s replacement.

He said on Thursday: “Eddie Nketiah is playing very well at the moment, and I expected nothing less in his first three or four games. He needs to keep going now – that’s how the top players do it. He will score goals, and he’s got attributes that Gabriel Jesus does not have. He’s been patient and I’ll give him his due – I hope it keeps going for him.”
