Tottenham Hotspur recorded a draw during their recent Premier League fixture.
Mauricio Pochettino recently stated that it could be ’10 years’ [Sky Sports] until Tottenham win a trophy and Paul Merson has astonishingly claimed that he made those comments to put a ‘seed’ in his player’s heads.
The former Arsenal man thinks that Pochettino is already off to Real Madrid and by putting those thoughts in a couple of the player’s heads he can then ‘take a few’ of them with him when he eventually leaves.
Spurs recently recorded a 1-1 draw against rivals Arsenal, which come off the back of them losing back-to-back Premier League games against Chelsea and Burnley, respectively.
Speaking on Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News (02/03/2019 at 12:15 pm), Merson had quite an amazing theory behind Pochettino’s recent trophy comments.
“I just think this manager is going to Real Madrid,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “Real Madrid are in disarray at the moment.
“I think he is putting a seed in the player’s heads by saying you aren’t winning the league for five to ten years when he leaves he’ll take a few of them with him. Call me a cynic here.”
In terms of the Premier League, many supporters would agree that Spurs are out of the race as they will be concentrating on making a name for themselves in the Champions League.
On Tuesday night, they travel to Germany for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund, with the London club holding a three-goal lead.
Regardless of what happens, for Pochettino’s side to be this far in the competition and to be sitting third in the league is an achievement in itself considering what he has spent or even not spent in recent seasons.
Nonetheless, Tottenham will no doubt be confident that they can progress to the next round of the Champions League, with even a narrow defeat on the night ensuring their name is in the hat for the quarter-finals.
