Tottenham Hotspur are desperately trying to end their 11-year wait for a trophy.

Paul Merson suggested that Tottenham’s season could be over if they lose to Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports.

Spurs were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea on penalties at the semi-final stage last night.

With nine points separating them and league leaders Liverpool in the table, and a tough tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League to come, the FA Cup perhaps represents Tottenham’s best chance of winning their first trophy since 2008.

Merson highlighted how Spurs cannot afford to lose to Palace on Sunday, when speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, suggesting the their season is currently hanging in the balance:

“What a massive game for Tottenham. Their season is in the balance. If they lose this then they are out of everything as I do not see them winning the Champions League after how they played at Chelsea. Their squad is not strong enough.”

Tottenham have been mightily impressive this season, but a succession of injuries to some of their key players is threatening to derail their campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino will surely be looking to bolster his ranks this month, but at the same time, it would be no surprise to see Spurs fail to sign anyone once again.

The Lilywhites should still be strong enough to beat Palace, however, and what a timely boost it would be for them, should they navigate their way through to the fifth round of the competition.
