Everton completed three January signings, with one coming in on deadline day.
Paul Merson has graded Everton’s January transfer window with a B+ on Sky Sports’ website after Sam Allardyce completed three signings including a loan deal for Manchester City’s Eliaquim Mangala on deadline day.
The Toffees were expected to busy in the window after Allardyce took over the reigns at the Merseyside club in December, following the sacking of Ronald Koeman.
A number of summer signings, brought to the club by Koeman, have flopped since their arrival including the likes of Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Nikola Vlasic and it was left to Allardyce to improve that.
Alongside Mangala, Allardyce brought in Theo Walcott from Arsenal and Cenk Tosun from Besiktas and former England international Merson believes the Toffees’ January business has been impressive.
“This has been a decent window,” Merson said. “They’ve let players go that weren’t playing and got them off the wage bill.
“Theo has scored over 100 goals for Arsenal and the lad Tosun needs an opportunity because he’s living off scraps so far. They’ll be pleased with their business.”
Allardyce decided to offload Ross Barkley to Chelsea and Aaron Lennon to Burnley, while Ramirez, Ademola Lookman and Kevin Mirallas have all left the club on loan to Sevilla, RB Leipzig and Olympiakos on loan.
Mangala could make his debut alongside Walcott and Tosun on Saturday, as the Toffees face a difficult trip to north London to face Arsenal who themselves completed one of the deals of the window by signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
