Paul Merson has said that he is not sure if Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold will be able to play in midfield against the bigger teams.
The former Arsenal star has been impressed by how well Alexander-Arnold has done in midfield for Liverpool in recent matches.
The 24-year-old is a right-back by trade, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been deploying him in a roaming role between midfield and defence.
Alexander-Arnold was superb in that role in Liverpool’s hammering of Leeds United in the Premier League this week.
Paul Merson on Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold
Merson told SportsKeeda: “Trent Alexander-Arnold is the best passer of the ball in England. He can spray the ball all over the pitch, and he can put it on a six-pence.
“He doesn’t play safe passes and will rip it up against lesser teams, but I don’t know if it’ll work against the big guns.
“His passing is second to none at Liverpool and I like what he’s trying – it’s very expansive.”

HITC Verdict: Stay positive
In our view, Liverpool fans should stay positive about Trent Alexander-Arnold doing well in his new roaming midfield role.
Yes, the 24-year-old has been doing well against the so-called lesser teams, but the England international could well do it against the big sides as well.
Playing in midfield is very different to playing at right-back, and we have to allow Alexander-Arnold time to improve and understand his new role better.
We simply cannot expect the 24-year-old to be an expert in his roaming role rightaway.
