Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Chelsea are not going to be signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane – even if Kane is exactly what Graham Potter’s side needs. Merson does not believe Kane would be willing to tarnish his Spurs legacy.

Kane, 29, has been in stunning form for Spurs, once again this season. In the Premier League, he has scored a huge 17 goals in 22 games. Those goals have seen him reach the 200 club in England’s top tier – only the third player to do it.

He is eight goals behind Wayne Rooney, and 60 behind Alan Shearer. He also became Tottenham’s all-time top scorer with 267 – overtaking the legend that is Jimmy Greaves. But of course, Kane’s long-term future remains in doubt.

Kane over the past week, after reaching 200 League goals, has said that he feels he will reach Shearer’s record. To do that, he will have to stay in England – ending any hope of a move to Bayern Munich. But will he do it at Tottenham?

His contract at Spurs ends in June 2024. So, if Spurs are to cash in, it may have to be this summer. Of course, they will be keen to tie him down. Chelsea lack a no.9, one to bang in the goals. Merson gave his take on Chelsea signing Kane.

“Everybody wants a centre forward, but Chelsea do need to get one. The one that is staring everybody in the face is Kane. I don’t think he goes to Chelsea because of his Tottenham legacy. He’d lose that if he moves to Stamford Bridge.”

So, if Kane is to go after the Premier League record, which looks likely, what is his next move? Manchester City have Erling Haaland – they will not be signing Kane. Liverpool do not have the cash – and have spent big on Darwin Nunez.

The Reds are struggling for the top four. Chelsea, too. They look unlikely to qualify for the Champions League. The only viable option right now for Kane is Manchester United. They need a striker and currently sit in third place in the league.
