Paul Merson has suggested that Everton’s Ross Barkley would not be making a good move by going to Tottenham Hotspur.

Paul Merson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 19th July, that Ross Barkley may be better off moving elsewhere other than Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton are set to offload Barkley, with Tottenham said to be the most likely buyers by the Daily Mirror.

Spurs have been tracking the England international for much of the summer so far, but are yet to make a bid.

And Merson feels that Barkley might be better off moving elsewhere, as he won’t get a game at Spurs.

“The World Cup is next year, it’s the ultimate for any footballer,” Merson said.

“He needs to play this year. He isn’t going to get a game at Spurs.

“Ross needs to play this year. If you’re playing week in week out, you have a chance to go to the World Cup.”

If Barkley moves to Tottenham he will have a huge amount of competition to earn a first-team place.

Spurs already have Dele Alli, Heung Min-Son, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen available to play in the slots behind the striker.

Barkley was not as productive as many of Tottenham’s other options for Everton last term, with Ronald Koeman often being left frustrated with the attacking midfielder.

The Daily Mirror have suggested that if Barkley does move to Spurs, he will become one of the North London club’s highest earners.
