Paul Merson writes off Tottenham and Celtic’s Champions League chances.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Paul Merson has written off Tottenham and Celtic’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.

Merson told SkySports’ The Debate (10pm 24/8) that the two teams will be battling to finish third and land Europa League spots.

Celtic are in Group B with Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Anderlecht.

Tottenham take on Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and APOEL.

Discussing Celtic’s chances, Merson said: “Its a brilliant draw, it’s great for Celtic in my opinion. You are going to see Neymar, the most expensive player ever.

“They have got a two legged game v Anderlecht. If they win that they are playing European football after Christmas.”

Merson added that he feels Tottenham Hotspur are in a similar situation, and will miss out on making the group stages.

He said: “For me their big games are the two legged game against APOEL. If they win that they will get through to the Europa.”

Tottenham’s hopes will be a lot higher, even though it will be difficult.

They beat Juventus in a pre-season friendly at Wembley and will be confident of doing the same again.

It is a big test for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who went out at the group stage last year in an easier group.

There is no need for them to give up just yet.
