Paul Merson disagrees with Tottenham Hotspur’s reportedly planned clear-out

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly decided to make wholesale changes to his squad this summer.

Paul Merson has told Soccer Saturday, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 6th April, that he believes Tottenham Hotspur would be incorrect to sell 12 players this summer.

The London Evening Standard have suggested that Spurs want to offload a sizeable chunk of their first team.

However, Merson thinks that Tottenham’s squad is already short of depth and making major changes would be the wrong decision from Mauricio Pochettino.

He said: “You’d like to think not. That’s one thing we have said, they’re a very good football team. I don’t think the squad is big enough and if you are going to start letting those players go, there’s some top draw players there that you’d find it hard to bring in better than that.

“I even heard Rose, Alderweireld [could go]. How are you going to replace them and Eriksen? If you’re getting someone in of that quality, you know the other big teams are looking at them too.”

Whether Tottenham will have a full scale clear-out this summer remains to be seen.

Pochettino has already hinted that Spurs face the biggest transfer window of his time in charge at the end of the season, which suggests that changes will be on the agenda.

Tottenham have not made a signing for well over a year, but are expected to invest in the summer.

Spurs are currently fighting to keep their place in the top four and if they are in the Champions League then their task of attracting top class players will become much easier.
