Tottenham Hotspur will face Juventus in the first knock-out stage of the Champions League next month.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson explained why he is concerned at the lack of depth currently present amongst the Spurs squad, when writing a column for Sky Sports, suggesting that they are two injuries away from being ‘average’.

Tottenham currently sit in fifth position in the Premier League table, a distant 18 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, but perhaps more importantly, three points behind fourth placed Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been in good form of late, however, and it would be no surprise to see them finish inside the top four, especially with the likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen firing on all cylinders.

The 24-year-old hitman has been in sensational form this season, scoring 28 goals in as many games thus far, and it doesn’t bare thinking about quite where Spurs would be without him.

Merson explained how Tottenham can beat anyone in Europe on their day, when writing his column for Sky Sports, but delivered words of warning regarding their lack of strength in depth:

“Tottenham could go far, but they’re two injuries away from being pretty average, let’s be honest. If Harry Kane got injured they’re hugely impacted, but not just them. We saw them go to Man City without their three strongest men; Alderweireld, Wanyama and Sanchez. And they got absolutely rinsed by Man City. But if they have their full team out, I think they give anyone in Europe a game. But it’ll all come down to injuries, and I’m not sure they have a big enough squad.”

The north London outfit face Juventus in the first knock-out stage of the Champions League on February 13th, and Pochettino will need every single one of his stars to perform to the absolute best of their abilities, if they are to have any chance whatsoever of reaching the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier competition.
