Paul Merson would like to see David Unsworth get the Everton job permanently.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

Paul Merson has told SkySports that he believes Everton should appoint David Unsworth on a permanent basis.

Unsworth has been placed in temporary charge after Ronald Koeman was fired this week.

His first game in charge was a narrow 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the EFL Cup last 16, but Merson believes Everton should take the gamble on the former player.

Merson said: “Everton showed a lot of fight under caretaker boss David Unsworth at Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

“I would give him the job on a permanent basis. If you cut him open, he bleeds Everton blue. That’s what the fans want, someone with passion for the club.”

David Unsworth, coach of Everton looks on during the Checkatrade Trophy group match between Bolton Wanderers and Everton under-23s at Macron Stadium on August 30, 2016 in Bolton, England.

Unsworth has had a lot of success coaching Everton’s under-23 side, winning the title last year in their age group.

Many of the players from that side are ready, or close to stepping up to the first team, and Unsworth could be the best manager possible to oversee their transition.

He may be unproven in senior management, and there will be a temptation to appoint a big name, but the timing could be right for the Toffees to hand Unsworth the chance and let him show what he is capable of.
