Mauricio Pochettino has endured a number of difficult days and weeks as Tottenham Hotspur manager.
Paul Merson has hit out at the Tottenham players after they suffered yet another damaging defeat in the Premier League at the weekend.
Merson claimed that he has seen Brighton ‘play well’ at Stamford Bridge, but even then Chelsea could have ‘scored 10’ against them, as he brutally savaged Tottenham’s performance at the Amex Stadium.
Following Spurs’ humiliating defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the supporters were looking for a reaction, but in the end, they witnessed their team put in another poor display.
Speaking to Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News (05/10/2019 at 5:30 pm), Merson let rip at Spurs’ performance and their reaction to that Bayern defeat.
“I think he’s not happy because he’s seeing a team that’s a very good team that’s getting blown away in football matches,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “I said they couldn’t get blown away by Brighton, they don’t blow teams away, Brighton blew them away. They blew them away!
“I mean they thoroughly deserved to win the game – you are sitting on the bench and watching this team get beat seven and three at Brighton! Three at Brighton! And it could have been four or five. Never looked like scoring. This is worrying, worrying times for Tottenham Hotspur. I am not exaggerating here. That is a bad, bad football result against Brighton.
“I have seen Brighton play well at Chelsea, and Chelsea could have had 10. This is not good and I can understand why the manager isn’t happy. He will be looking at this going, these players aren’t giving me what they should be giving me. I don’t think there was one tackle against Brighton. I have played in games. If we were getting beat 3-0 at Brighton, Tony Adams would be running around kicking everyone from pillar to post.
“There would be people who would be hurting so much that they would do something to stop that happening and that’s not happening at Tottenham. It’s an easy, easy ride at Tottenham. That can’t be right with the quality of footballers they have at that team.”
Mauricio Pochettino and the Spurs players will simply have to keep going because if they don’t try and get out of this bad patch then it’ll affect their chances of finishing in the top-four.
Whilst there won’t be any worry yet, the fans will start to fret at their chances of losing a European spot if their results continue and the players don’t sort themselves out.
The up and coming international break will perhaps do the players, fans and the manager some good because it’ll allow them to refresh and come back fighting.
