Former Premier League striker Mario Balotelli is reportedly being considered by Newcastle United.
Paul Merson has sarcastically stated ‘who is going to fight harder than him’ when responding to rumours that Newcastle United are interested in Mario Balotelli.
The Mirror claimed a few days ago that the 28-year-old could make a shock return to the Premier League as Newcastle consider signing him to pep up their attack.
Italy international Balotelli played for Manchester City during the early years of his career, scoring 30 goals and winning one Premier League title with the club.
Rafa Benitez’ side are currently two points above the drop zone and require some fresh impetus during the January transfer window as they aim to end the season in a positive fashion.
Upon hearing the Balotelli and Newcastle rumours, Merson sarcastically mocked the potential transfer as he hinted that Benitez requires players that will work their socks off on the field of play.
“Well who is going to fight harder than him,” Merson told Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme on 05/01/2019 at 2:55 pm. “He’s perfect for a relegation battle, surely, no?”
During his time in England’s top flight, Balotelli was not known for his hard-working approach, more so for being a laid-back character, both off the field and on the field.
At this moment in time, he is plying his trade in France under the stewardship of Patrick Vieira at Nice where he has played only 10 Ligue 1 games – he is yet to find the back of the net this term.
