Tottenham Hotspur have previously tried to sign Alvaro Morata, according to Mauricio Pochettino.
Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that he found it “strange” of Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino to reveal that Alvaro Morata snubbed a move to Spurs .
The Spanish hitman comes up against Tottenham tomorrow as the Premier League champions visit Wembley in the North Londoners’ first home game of the season.
Had things been a little different, the former Real Madrid man might be a Lilywhite player going into the London derby after Pochettino revealed earlier this month that he had previously spoken to the 24-year-old about joining his team.

The Argentine went on to claim that Morata was put off by the fact that Pochettino had Harry Kane, who has won the Premier League’s Golden Boot the last two years running.
And Merson, writing in The Daily Star, believes such an admission might be an attempt to embarrass the West Londoners, who pipped Tottenham to the title last season.
He said: “He could have gone to Spurs but Mauricio Pochettino says he didn’t fancy it because of Kane. I thought that was a strange thing to say.”
“Maybe he said it because Chelsea are champions and he wanted to embarrass them, but Morata could show Spurs what they are missing tomorrow.”
Morata was on the losing side for the Blues last week as Antonio Conte’s side suffered a shock 3-2 defeat by Burnley at Stamford Bridge, but the Spain international, who cost Chelsea a reported £65 million, scored and looked a fine addition.
