Paul Merson does not seem convinced by Liverpool signing Ozan Kabak, as quoted in The Daily Star.
Liverpool signed Kabak on loan from Schalke on the final day of the transfer window.
The defending Premier League champions also secured the services of Ben Davies from Preston North End in the Championship on transfer deadline day.
Former Arsenal star Merson, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, does not seem to rate Kabak highly, suggesting that if he is that good, then he should start against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “I like Ben Davies from Preston. He’s a ball-playing defender. But it’s a big step up. And if Ozan Kabak is such a big talent, why didn’t they sign him years ago? If he’s such a good player, he should start against City. Let’s see if he does.”
Give Ozan Kabak a chance
Schalke are in real danger of getting relegated from the Bundesliga at the end of the season, and one can understand why there will be scepticism regarding bringing in a central defender from that team.
However, Kabak should be given a chance. After all, it is never one particular player’s fault if a team are doing as badly as Schalke are.
Liverpool needed to sign a defender in the January transfer window due to injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.
Moreover, the Reds have signed Kabak only on loan, meaning that they are not committed to spending any transfer fee on him in the summer of 2021.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said on the club’s official website earlier this month that the youngster is “really a big, big talent”, and fans should be positive about him.
