Paul Merson says that Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s situation could become like of Emile Heskey when he was at Liverpool.
Heskey was on the books of Liverpool from 2000 until 2004 and formed a formidable partnership with Michael Owen upfront for the Reds during that period.
While Owen banged in the goals for fun, Heskey was instrumental in the way the Reds played by holding the ball up and making space for his strike-partner.
The 41-year-old former England international striker was not very prolific, and there was criticism levelled at him when Liverpool went through a bad spell and he did not score.
Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Merson believes that Calvert-Lewin could have the same situation.
The Sky Sports pundit, though, has praised the 22-year-old English forward – who made 19 starts and 16 substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Toffees this season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
Merson said about Calvert-Lewin on the Gillette Soccer Special show on Sky Sports News on Sunday (12:55pm, May 12, 2019): “I like this kid. I think he is a real good player. He works for the team.
“The problem’s going to be, it was with Heskey. Great player Heskey was, and everybody went he was brilliant holding the ball, but as soon as you start losing games, people go, ‘How many goals did Heskey get? None in seven’. But no one moaned during those seven games when they were winning. This is the problem this lad’s got.”
