Tottenham Hotspur’s title challenge appears to be over, after their recent defeat to Liverpool.
Paul Merson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on 15th February, that Tottenham Hotspur are missing a player like Xabi Alonso in their squad.
Tottenham have built one of the youngest squads in the Premier League, and there is great excitement about the future at White Hart Lane.

However, Spurs have faced criticism for the poor performance which they put in against Liverpool at Anfield in their last match.
Tottenham were outplayed on Merseyside, and they were accused of lacking fight at a crucial point of the season.
Merson is still convinced that Tottenham have the capabilities to bring silverware to White Hart Lane in the near future, but the former Arsenal midfielder does feel that there is a lack of experienced heads in Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

“They will [win something],” Pochettino said. “They have a good young team, but when you’ve got a young team you need a couple of experienced players.
“When they were playing against Liverpool last week and they were on the rack, they needed an Alonso, just someone who could calm the game down. They miss exactly what Arsenal miss – that bit of experience in midfield.”
Tottenham’s chances of actually going out and signing Alonso from Bayern Munich have now gone, as the Spanish international is set to retire at the end of the season.

Spurs’ title challenge does appear to be over, as they are now 10 points behind Chelsea, but they are still well placed to qualify for the Champions League.
Tottenham are also still in the FA Cup and the Europa League, meaning there are opportunities to lift trophies this term.
