Paul Merson has claimed that Wolves have had the better season than Watford as he lauded Nuno Espirito Santo’s side for the manner in which they have performed in the Premier League.

Both teams are set to meet in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday afternoon, with the winner set to face Pep Guardiola’s free-flowing Manchester City side in the final in May.

Following Wolves’ promotion from the Premier League in the summer, they have showcased their attacking style, lack of fear against the top-six and a number of individual players have stood out.

Speaking to Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News (06/04/2019 at 12:45 pm), former Aston Villa midfielder Merson explained why Wolves have had the better season than their FA Cup semi-final opponents.

“I think they both have had great seasons but I am just going to go with Wolves,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “I haven’t seen too many teams come out of the Championship and do what Wolves have done and mix it as well. Not just come up and sit 10 men behind the ball.

“I would say Wolves on the strength of that. But don’t get me wrong, Watford have been phenomenal as well.”

At this moment in time, Wolves are sitting eighth in the Premier League table, one point ahead of Javi Gracia’s side, who have arguably surprised a lot of people this season.

With both clubs in FA Cup action this weekend, it allowed Leicester City to move into seventh place after they ran out comfortable winners against already-relegated Huddersfield.

Even though the Foxes moved into the top seven, it is highly likely that one of Wolves or Watford will end up finishing in that position at the end of the season.
