West Ham striker Andy Carroll came off the bench during his side’s win over Arsenal on Saturday.
Paul Merson has claimed that West Ham star Andy Carroll should be on a ‘pay as you play’ deal with his contract running out in the summer.
Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini admitted that the 30-year-old striker has a ‘challenge’ on his hands to earn new terms on his deal, as quoted by football.london.
Former Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Merson stated what should happen to the powerful forward if he were to earn a new deal either with West Ham or elsewhere.
“I think the best he can hope for is a good pay as you play or play as you are fit contract,” Merson told Soccer Saturday on 12/01/2019 at 12:20 pm.
“I think if someone takes him that’ll be the situation. You are not going to give £100k-a-week to someone who gets onto the pitch 10 games a season, in my opinion. But if I knew he was going to give me 25 games, I’d take him all day long. He is one player I wouldn’t want to play as a centre-half.”
In recent seasons, Carroll has been ravaged by various injuries, the most recent required him to have ankle surgery which meant that he didn’t start the campaign until December.
Carroll scored his first goal of the season in January when he found the back of the net against Championship side Birmingham City in the FA Cup.
At this moment in time, star man Marko Arnautovic leads the line for the London club, but he could be heading for the exit door, as reported by Sky Sports.
If the Austrian were to leave the club then it would open up more chances for Carroll to start and prove himself at the London Stadium before his contract runs out in the summer.
Following that home win against Arsenal, the Irons will travel down to the south coast to take on Bournemouth in their next Premier League clash.
