Paul Merson has claimed that Everton will be ‘scratching their heads’ as to why they didn’t appoint Brendan Rodgers as their manager if they lose to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier this week, Rodgers left his role at Scottish Premiership side Celtic and moved to the Premier League to take the hot seat at Leicester City.

It is the first time Rodgers has returned to manage in England top-flight since leaving Anfield, with the Merseyside derby set to take place on the same day as his managerial debut for the Foxes.

Speaking to Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News (02/03/2019 1:30 pm), Merson claimed that current Toffees boss Marco Silva will be feeling the heat if he loses against Liverpool as he also offered his thoughts on Rodgers.

“I think Leicester have had an absolute right result here [in appointing Rodgers as manager],” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “If Everton get beat [against Liverpool], he’s [Marco Silva] in trouble. And Everton will be scratching their heads in thinking, ‘why didn’t I go for Rodgers?’.

“I mean, I find it a strange one. I know he’s a manager of Liverpool, but smell the coffee, they need to start moving forward Everton.”

During his time at Anfield, Rodgers came within a whisker of lifting the Premier League title as they now find themselves in a not too dissimilar situation with Jurgen Klopp.

At this moment in time, they are two points behind current leaders Manchester City after their narrow away win at Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth on Saturday.

But they can reclaim top spot if they pick up three points in their rivals back yard, with Divock Origi netting a last-minute winner during the reverse fixture.

Everton, who recorded a 3-0 win at relegation-threatened Cardiff City on Tuesday night, will be looking to spoil their party, with the Reds only losing one league game this season.
