Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (26/12/20 at 2:20 pm) that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho would have got ‘eight years’ if he made the comments that Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo recently made.

Tottenham travel down to Wolves tonight, where the opposition manager is in a foul mood after he criticised referee Lee Mason follow his side’s defeat to Burnley.

The Wolves boss refused to apologies for claiming that Mason was ‘not good enough’ to officiate at the top level, as he told BBC Sport.

Merson shared that managers simply cannot pass judgments such as that and he hilariously claimed that Tottenham’s outspoken man in the dugout would have been handed a long sentence if he made such comments.

“I dread to think what his fine is going to be,” said Merson. “If Mourinho would have said that he would have probably got about eight years. He would have got eight years for that. He would have.

“Even though you think it, you cannot say that. I don’t know if he’s married. But if he’s married, his wife would have been shouting at the telly saying ‘please stop, please stop, it’s Christmas’.

“But is it the FA or the Premier League [that fine him] because they will be saying ‘go on, keep on going. Keep on going’. I know what he thinks and there will be a lot of managers who think it. But you cannot say it now.”

Well, both managers will be hoping that their post-match interviews tonight are referee-less and VAR-less.

Although, that’s a far stretch given that VAR cannot help but get involved in near-on every Premier League game in a negative way.

Nonetheless, Spurs go into tonight’s match after suffering back-to-back defeats and they know they have to arrest their mini slide if they are to challenge for the title.
