Leeds United are currently sitting outside of the Championship’s top two with a game in hand on their rivals.
Paul Merson has worryingly claimed that ‘hectic’ Leeds United are ‘crying out’ for ‘a bit of experience’ as they aim for promotion to the Premier League this season.
The former Aston Villa midfielder stated that an experienced 30-year-old would ‘calm everyone down’, with Marcelo Bielsa opting to play a lot of youngsters in his forward-thinking & high-pressing system.
Winger Jack Clarke, 18, has arguably been one of his standout players and the club’s breakthrough star in what has been a successful campaign, so far.
Nonetheless, Merson stated that a club of Leeds United’s size needs to be playing in England’s top-tier as he offered his assessment on the Yorkshire club.
“They have done great so far this season,” Merson told the Debate show on Sky Sports on 18/02/2019. “I think they are crying out for a bit of experience in the team.
“They are a young team, but they are a young team because they have to play a certain way and you are not going to play that way at 30 odd years of age. But I still think they need that 30-year-old in there just to calm everyone down.
“I watched them a few times and it’s hectic, it’s hectic. I would love them to come up, I really would. They are a massive football club who need to be in the Premier League.”
One of the star players in the middle of the park for Bielsa this season has been academy product Kalvin Philips, who has shown maturity beyond his years.
His ability to read the game from a defensive standpoint, stay calm in possession and play at centre-back during periods of this season proves that he has been another rising talent for the club.
Over the weekend, Leeds dropped out of the Championship’s top two after Norwich City and Sheffield United picked up three points against Bolton and Reading, respectively.
But the Whites, who are level on points with United and two points behind Daniel Farke’s side, do have a game in hand on their promotion rivals.
