Harry Kane has Tottenham Hotspur ‘over a barrel’ now.

That is the view of Paul Merson who has reacted to midweek news about Kane’s future with Spurs.

According to Sky Sports, Kane is open to signing a new contract at Tottenham, amid speculation about a transfer to Manchester United.

The 29-year-old only has 18 months left on his contract in North London.

During the summer of 2021, the closest Kane has come to leaving, Merson claims chairman Daniel Levy held the cards then due to how long was left on his existing deal.

But the former Arsenal midfielder believes now that the England international is in a position of power to demand whatever he wants in order to stay at Hotspur Way.

He told The Star: “I wasn’t surprised to read that Harry Kane is open to signing a new contract with Tottenham. He now has the club over a barrel as he knows he can demand whatever money he wants.

“He can now ask Spurs for whatever he wants and Daniel Levy has to give him it. Back in 2021 after the European Championships when Kane wanted to join Man City, Levy called all the shots due to the length of his contract. Now the tables have turned and Kane and his team hold all the cards as he approaches the final 12 months of his deal.”

Merson is right but let’s be honest, Kane, who earns £200,000 per week [Spotrac], is already a very wealthy man.

At his age, being six months away from turning 30, the Tottenham hitman will be conscious now of his lack of silverware more than ever.

And although he is apparently open to leaving North London, he might be just as willing to call it a day at Spurs and moving elsewhere to boost his chances of finally winning something in football.
