Paul Merson has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 2nd October, that Everton should have signed Tammy Abraham from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Everton sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, and they have failed to replace the target-man.

The Toffees brought in a raft of attacking midfielders, but failed to bring in a player who could lead their line adequately.

And Merson feels that Everton should have looked to take Abraham from Chelsea, as he would have been perfectly suited to their needs.

“No, it’s not [happening]. They look like they have bought a lorry load of players and have no pace,” Merson said.

“I looked at it yesterday and thought ‘you’ve spent all that money, yet half the Burnley players would get in that Everton team’.

“If you’ve not got pace people like Sigurdsson and Rooney, what do they do? They are just smothered, because nobody is running beyond them.

“They should have bought Tammy Abraham, who went to Swansea, because he loves running.”

Everton never made a move for Abraham last summer, and Chelsea ended up loaning him to Swansea.

Abraham has scored two goals in his first seven Premier League appearances for Swansea, and he has shown flashes of quality.

Everton, meanwhile, are still searching for the answer up-front – with Ronald Koeman recently turning to the likes of Oumar Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table, with their next match coming against Brighton & Hove Albion in two weekends’ time.
