Arsenal’s season has imploded following an abysmal run of results.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson claims that his former team are the best side in the world when there is no pressure on them to perform.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said:

“Arsenal are the best team in the world when the pressure is off.”

This campaign has been typical of so many of Arsenal’s seasons over the last 12 years.

They made a fantastic start to the campaign, and held a two point advantage over Leicester City at the top of the table heading into the new year.

Their title challenge was derailed, however, following a run of just four wins in 12 Premier league games and now sit 13 points behind league leaders Leicester, and are all but out of the title race.

Many pundits believe that Arsenal will string a run of wins together now that the pressure is off. It is an eerily similar scenario to last season, when the Gunners produced a fantastic run towards the end of the campaign, when the knew they were out of the title race. Adrian Durham gave his view on the North London club in his column for The Daily Mail on how producing the goods when it doesn’t matter is so typically Arsenal:

“As soon as the pressure is off, Arsene Wenger looks like he can still do it. But once the pressure is on he crumbles, and his players lose their bottle completely.”

It would take a monumental collapse from the Foxes for Arsenal to get back in the title race, and will surely be another season of what ifs for Gunners fans.
