Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino’s future has been heavily speculated about recently.
Pochettino’s future at Spurs is currently uncertain, and Merson feels that Real Madrid will target him to replace Zinedine Zidane, if they fail to win the Champions League final.
Indeed, Merson believes that Pochettino’s public comments about needing a bigger budget suggest that he already knows that a move away from Spurs is on the cards.
He said: “If Liverpool beat them in the Champions League, I think Real Madrid get Pochettino.
“I think he has half an incline of that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s heard something and that’s why he’s throwing all this stuff out – I need that and this. You’ve never heard him say that before.”
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could now be at a crossroads, as he may have to loosen the purse strings.
Tottenham have operated on a tight budget recently, with salaries capped and exorbitant transfer fees not paid.
However, Pochettino’s comments suggest that he wants more money to be able to get his side over the line.
Tottenham have come so close to winning the Premier League title in recent years, but have still been unable to deliver any silverware.
Spurs finished in third place in the Premier League this season, but there are fears that they could be outspent by many of their top four rivals in the summer.
