Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady has been a regular for manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Paul Merson has backed Wolves ‘talker’ Conor Coady to get an international call-up for England following his performances in the Premier League this season.
The 25-year-old has been an ever-present in the league for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, who are currently sitting in the bottom half of the table.
Former Aston Villa midfielder Merson explained why centre-back Coady should get international recognition as he is yet to receive a senior cap for England.
“With Gareth, you have always got a chance,” Merson told Soccer Saturday on 12/01/2019 at 12:30 pm.
“I wouldn’t say he is a million miles off. I have seen other defenders come and get in who are the same as him or not as good as him. I would give him a chance.
“One thing I like about him is his attitude. And he’s a talker. Not too many talkers about in the game. Always see him organising and chatting to other players.”
Over the course of the season, Coady has played 24 games in all competitions for Nuno’s side, helping his team secure six clean sheets along the way.
Coady recently helped Wolves progress through to the next round of the FA Cup when his side beat Liverpool 2-1 on home soil.
The Liverpool academy graduate will now be preparing for his side’s Premier League clash against champions Manchester City on Monday night – the duo recorded a draw during the reverse fixture in August.
England manager Gareth Southgate has deployed a three at the back system like Nuno has implemented at Molineux, but the Three Lions manager has recently been playing a flat back four.
Nonetheless, Southgate’s ability and knack of switching formations will increase Coady’s chances of making the England squad when it is announced in March.
