Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has predicted on Skysports.com that Everton will not finish in the top five of the Premier League this season.

Merson has praised the signings that Everton made in the summer transfer window, but the England international has suggested that the Toffees should have recruited a proven goalscorer following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United.

Among the players that the Merseyside outfit signed in the summer transfer window are attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen, defender Michael Keane, striker Sandro Ramirez, forward Wayne Rooney and attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Former Arsenal star Merson has suggested that Everton should have signed someone to replace Lukaku, with the Belgium international striker joining Premier League rivals United in the summer transfer window for an initial fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £75 million.

“I look at the players they have brought in – Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Michael Keane – and they are all nice signings, but I still think they are short because they sold Romelu Lukaku,” Merson wrote on Skysports.com.

“How are they going to replace his 25 goals a season? They have done good business and you can’t moan at it, but I don’t think they are going to get in the top five.”

Luis Hernandez of Mexico tries to tackle Paul Merson of England during the Star Sixe's match between England and Mexico at The O2 Arena on July 15, 2017 in London, England.

Everton did great business in the summer transfer window, but Ronald Koeman’s side should have signed a proven goalscorer.

Ramirez is only 22 years of age and is very young, and it would not be wise of the Merseyside outfit to expect him to score 20 to 25 goals in the Premier League this season.
