Paul Merson has aimed a brutal jibe at Manchester City by claiming that there are still ’empty seats’ at the Etihad even though they win ‘everything’, as he made a comparison with Everton, whilst speaking to Sky Sports.
The outspoken pundit was making the point that owners have to listen to supporters and he thinks Farhad Moshiri has done that by appointing Frank Lampard as manager compared to he brought in Liverpool legend, Rafa Benitez.
After Everton’s previous Premier League game, their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, fans protested at how their club was being run following the ill-fated reign of Benitez.
Since then, Lampard has been given the reigns to the managerial role and the mood has started to head towards the right direction.
But when Merson spoke about fans needing to be listened to, he couldn’t help but jab at those from the blue half of Manchester.
“Those fans are going to be there longer than anyone,” said Merson. “They turn up week in, week out.
“Let’s be fair, when was the last time Everton won a trophy? 1995. I don’t ever remember turning on Sky Sports and seeing many, if any empty seats at Goodison Park.
“You can turn on the TV and Man City are playing, and they are winning everything, but there are still empty seats. That tells you everything.
“You’ve got to listen to the fans and this time Farhad Moshiri, and I think there could be exciting times ahead for Everton. The players that have come in are attacking players and I think Lampard can get this team going.”

Man City may well be the current Premier League champions and they have won trophy after trophy for so many years.
But, historically, they aren’t and never will be a bigger club than Everton.
The Toffees are hoping to get back to the top and add trophies to their cabinet again.
They have spent the money, but the results on the pitch haven’t matched what the ambitions are from the boardroom, even if Moshiri has made some terrible mistakes during his time at the club.
